Accessibility Audit

What Is An Accessibility Audit?

An Accessibility Audit is a formal assessment of an existing building, tenancy, or site to evaluate compliance with access and mobility requirements under the National Construction Code (NCC), the Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standards 2010, and relevant Australian Standards.

The audit involves a site visit to review existing conditions and identify any discrepancies between the built environment and the requirements of the Building Code of Australia (BCA). This allows the extent of works required to achieve compliance to be clearly understood.

Following the site inspection, a written Accessibility Audit Report is prepared. The report identifies applicable NCC provisions and access standards, outlines areas of compliance and non-compliance, and provides recommendations or best-practice options to address identified issues, as well as further recommendations on universal design to enhance the environment.

Accessibility audits are undertaken with reference to the BCA 2022, the Premises Standards, relevant Australian Standards, and the spirit and intent of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth). Assessment methods typically include observation, photography, measurement, gradient measurement, and door force testing.

Why Would I Need An Accessibility Audit?

An Accessibility Audit is undertaken to assess how well a building or space meets current accessibility standards and supports inclusion for all users. By conducting a thorough onsite inspection, the audit identifies areas where access may be limited, non-compliant, or could be improved, providing a clear understanding of the building’s performance against the National Construction Code (NCC), the Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standards 2010, and relevant Australian Standards.

Accessibility is important in every type of building, from workplaces and public facilities to retail and commercial spaces. Ensuring environments are accessible promotes safety, usability, and inclusivity for people with mobility, vision, or hearing impairments, as well as the elderly, families with young children, and other users.

By carrying out an onsite assessment, an Accessibility Audit gives building owners and operators confidence that compliance is being actively evaluated in the actual environment, rather than on paper alone. Following the inspection, a detailed written report outlines areas of compliance and non-compliance, provides practical recommendations, and may include guidance on universal design to enhance the environment. This ensures informed decision-making and helps create spaces that are functional, welcoming, and accessible to everyone.
